Harry W. Roberts
ROBERTS
LARUE — Harry W. Roberts, age 78, of 371 N. Front St., LaRue, died Thursday Aug. 7, 2003, at 12:20 p.m. at Marion General Hospital in Marion.
He was born Nov. 14, 1924, in Center Rutland, Vt, to the late Harry Lee and Rose (Legacy) Roberts. On July 9,1960, he married M. Lillian Outland and she survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Douglas L. (Deborah) Roberts of LaRue, Richard A. (Jeannie) Roberts of Bucyrus and Lance W. Roberts of LaRue; four grandchildren, Christina and Adam Roberts of LaRue, Nicholas Roberts of Marion, and Nakisha (James) Meade of Bucyrus; one great-grandchild, Madison Roberts of LaRue; three sisters, Beverly (Al) Titorenko of Claremont, N.H., Carolyn (Kenneth) Beulieu of Windsor, Vt., and Ramona Ladd of Cornish, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews.
One brother, Lee Roberts, and one sister, Shirley Cross, are deceased.
Mr. Roberts started his career with the Roberts Outdoor Store in Marion. He later went to work for Depot Sales, where he worked for 28 years and was sales manager and vice president. He graduated from Windsor High School in Windsor, Vt.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp and spent two and a half years in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Phillip-pi-Clement Post 101 American Legion of LaRue where he
served as commander and also adjutant, and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He was a 37-year member of the Kiwanis Club, first in LaRue and then the Marion Town and Country Club. He held all the offices in Kiwanis many times over. He was on the board of public affairs for 26 years.
He was a member of the original steering committee for the LaRue park and swimming pool; charter member of the LaRue Development Corp., where he served as president and volunteer manager of Kiwanis Village for 20 years; past president and secretary treasurer for 10 years of the LaRue baseball for youth; Cub Scout master of the LaRue Cub Scouts Pack 36 for nine years and was on the organizing committee for the first Oorang Bang and served as chairman for 10 years.
He was Elgin West District Chairman for the United Way for many years, volunteered for Meals on Wheels and also worked with the L.A.S.A.P. at the Methodist Church.
He was The Marion Star reporter for the LaRue area for many years, was honored as LaRue Community Hero in August 1996 and ran the Something Different Card Shop in LaRue. He enjoyed sports, outdoor activities, traveling and spending time with his family.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday Aug. 12,2003, at 11 a.m. at the Stofcheck Funeral Home in LaRue. Services will be officiated by the Rev. Edward W. Fu-gate. Burial will be in the LaRue Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home in LaRue from 4-8 p.m. Monday.
