Avis LaMoyne "Al" Converse, 96, of Richwood, died Thursday afternoon,
July 12, 2007, at the Heartland of Marysville. He retired from the Ohio Reformatory for Women in 1977 as a stationary engineer. A member of Essex United Methodist Church, he served the United States in the civil service after Pearl Harbor, helping clean up the naval shipyards. He was a farmer and an active member of the Richwood Civic Center, where he was involved with the senior choir and the Kitchen Band. He served 22 years and more than 4,500 volunteer hours with the Memorial Hospital meals program. He was born July 4, 1911, in LaRue, to the late Earnest E. and Mollie Rebecca Kale Converse. He also was predeceased by four brothers and one sister. On Oct. 20, 1946, in Columbus, he married Annabel Landon Converse, and she survives. Also surviving are their children, Beth Ann (Bill) Wood of Prospect, Dan (Karen) Converse of Richwood, and Steven (Sharon) Converse of Circleville; nine grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Stofcheck Funeral Home in Richwood, where funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m., with Pastor Larry Davis officiating. Burial will be at Claibourne Cemetery.
