Garland Shorter


PROSPECT — Garland Shorter, age 92, of rural Prospect, died Sunday evening, Jan. 30, 2005, at Heartland of Marion.
He was born Dec. 22,1912, in Copper Hill, Va., to the late Lewis Wade and Ocie Ida Wade Manning) Shorter.
He was a graduate of the Westerville High School, was in the 3 C's, served on the U.S.S. Lexington before Pearl Harbor was a radio operator.
He retired in 1977 from Ohio Edison as an electrical engineer after 38 years of service.
Garland was also an amateur radio operator, member of the Prospect Knights of Pythias, the Marion Radio Club and the Ohio Edison Retirees Club.
He enjoyed doing yard work, gardening and loved being around dogs.
On Dec. 24,1934, he married Emma Josephine Long and she died Jan. 11,1995.
Surviving are three daughters, Roberta Fitzpatrick of Marion, Barbara (Sonny) Carns of Sun City West, Ariz, and Lorie (Dan) Anderson of Richwood; a son-in-law, Dale Whiteman of Sun City West, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Kathryn Jo Whiteman, and two infants sons, Robert John Henry Shorter and Garland Richard Shorter and two brothers, Carl and Garnet Shorter and a great-grandson.
Private family graveside services will be held Friday at the Otterbein Cemetery in Westerville.
