Harry Merld Devers Jr.
Harry Merld Devers Jr., 82, of Willowbrook Village in Delaware where he had lived for the last five years died Sunday, Oct. 24,2004, at Grady Memorial Hospital. He was a former 50-year resident of Richwood and was formerly of Mansfield.
He was a graduate of Bethesda High School and attended the Ohio State University. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1941 to 1945. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Ford Island and Johnson Island, serving 42 months of sea duty on the USS Kenneth Whiting in the Pacific. He worked for more than 50 years for the Caldwell & Bloor Company of Mansfield, beginning as a pharmacy assistant and working as a salesman for most of his career.
He was a member of the Richwood First Baptist Church and a life member of the DAV, Richwood VFW Post 870, Richwood American Legion Baccarat Post 40 and Mount Carmel Lodge 303 F&AM in Rich-wood. He was very community minded and worked over the years with the North Union Athletic Boosters, a group he helped start, the North Union Music Boosters, the school carnival and Richwood Park, to name a few of the projects he was active with. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, music and dancing and the joy of his life was his family, his wife, children and grandchildren.
He was born Aug. 8, 1922, in Brilliant to the late Harry M. and Ella Deafenbaugh Devers Sr. and was predeceased by a son, David Harry Devers; three brothers, Charles Ivan, George Raymond and Paul Henry Devers; and a sister Barbara Bricker.
He is survived by his wife, Dora L. Owens Devers whom he married July 30, 1949, in Mansfield; a son, Daniel (Carol) Devers of Richwood; four daughters, Debra Kay (Ted) Walton of Johnstown, Diana Lee (Joe) Pereira of Hilo, Hawaii, Darcy Louise (Paul) Hegreness of Mentor and Dale Ann (Mike) Falini of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Sylvia Thomas of Texas; a sister-in-law, Marge Devers of Mansfield; a brother-in-law, Harold Bricker of Sandusky; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Stofcheck Funeral Home in Richwood and burial will be at the Claibourne Cemetery where veteran's graveside services will be conducted by the Rich-wood VFW and American Legion posts. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Richwood First Baptist Church or the Willowbrook Village Memorial fund in care of the funeral home.
