James L. "Red" McElroy


James L. "Red" McElroy, 70, of Richwood died Sunday, Aug. 25j 2002, at his home after a four-month illness.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and was a member of American Legion Post 162 in Marion. He retired from the former Marion Power Shovel Company in 1994 after more than 37 years of service. He was a tremendous sports fan, following the North Union Wildcats, Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns and Indians and NASCAR. He enjoyed fishing and playing golf. His greatest love was his family.
He was born Feb. 15, 1932, in West Mansfield to the late Dwight T. and Agnes Mae Thompson McElroy and was predeceased by a brother, Wilton McElroy.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Betty Eaches McElroy whom he married April 28, 1952, in Lawrenceburg, Ind.; two sons, Gregory W. (Carol) McElroy of Brownwood, Texas, and Rick James (Robin) McElroy of Phoenix, Ariz.; a grandson, Quinn McElroy; a step-grandson, Jason Wedeman; a sister, Dottie Jean Bill) Davis of Richwood; a brother, Ernest McElroy of Richwood; a sister-in-law, Johna (Bill) Nibert of Richwood; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Stofcheck Funeral Home in Richwood. The Rev. Fred Cheney will officiate and burial will be at the Claibourne Cemetery where veterans graveside services will be conducted by Richwood VFW Post 870. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
