Robert J. "Smity" Smith


Robert J. "Smity" Smith, 79, of Prospect died Saturday, August 25, 2001 at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was a World War II Army Air Force veteran, serving in England in the 8th Air Force. He had served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and was a retired maintenance worker at the Young Life Southwind Christian Camp in Florida and as a custodian at Elgin South Elementary School. He was a member of the Prospect Senior Citizens and Marion VFW Post 7301.
He was born May 14, 1922, in Marion to the late Clarence D. and Grace I. Brady Smith and was predeceased by three brothers and a grandson, Randy Smith.
He is survived by his wife Betty Jane Shuster Smith whom he married Jan. 9, 1942, in Jackson; two sons, Ronald (Nancy) Smith of Milwaukee, Wis., and Richard (Mary) Smith of Rossville, Tenn.; four daughters, Kathryn (James) Winteringham of Forest, Janice (John) Stiffler of Richwood, Rhoda (James) North of Tulsa, Okla., and Teresa (Michael) Warner of Marion; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Brammer of Marion.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Prospect Cemetery. The Rev. Stephen Bull will officiate and there will be no calling hours.
