Jay Hoffman Bevis


Jay Hoffman Bevis, 84, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at his
Prospect residence. The retired fanner graduated from Essex
High School and was a veteran of World War II having served in
the U. S. Army, receiving the Purple Heart.
He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church, Verne
I. : Mounts American Legion Post 368, Durward Lodge #153
Knights of Pythias and served two terms as Prospect Township
Trustee. .
The native of Union County was born Aug. 16, 1915, a son of
Fred and Sylvia Hoffman Bevis. He married the former Dorothy
Powell December 31,1939.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Sylvia (Paul) Harmon
of Prospect, Joan (William) Hartley of Bellevue, and.Jean
(Richard) Clingenpeel of Marion; 10 grandchildren: Jill Harmon of
Cardington, 'Lynda Ware of Prospect, David Harmon of Prospect,
Jeffrey Hartley of Bellevue, Lori Hartley of Bellevue, Kay Jackola
of South Range,: Mich., Jodi Lett of Ft Worth, Tx., Michael
Clingenpeel of Marion, Thomas Clingenpeel of Marion, and Troy
Keller of Columbus; 27 great-grandchildren and a great-greatgrandchild.
A step brother, Howard Hoffman of Florida, also survives.
Four brothers, Frank Bevis, Fay Bevis, Ralph Bevis and Joe
Bevis; a step sister Theo Mehaffey; a granddaughter and a great -
granddaughter, preceded him in death.
The Rev. David L. Hoffman conducted funeral services Tuesday,
Aug. 31, 1999, at the Prospect United Methodist Church. Burial
was a Prospect Cemetery. Gehm-Ballinger Funeral Home was in
charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Prospect United
methodist Church Memorial Fund or the Heinzerling
Developmental Center.
