Rufus M. "Smitty" Smith, 73, of Richwood died Monday, Sept 27, 1993, at
Marion General Hospital. He was retired from the maintenance department at Quaker Oats in Marion and was a self-employed painter. He drove the starting gate at harness races around the state. He was of the Protestant faith and was an army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Richwood American Legion Post #40, Mount Carmel Chapter #303 F&AM, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, Aladdin Temple of Columbus and Union County Shrine Club. He was born June 6, 1920, in Morgan, Ky., to the late Oscar and Rissie Riggsby Smith. He was preceded in death by a sister. He married Virginia Harraman on July 26,1946, in Marion and she survives. He is also survived by two brothers, Robert Smith of Richwood and Don Smith of Elizabethtown, Ky.; two sisters, Clome Holbrook of West Liberty, Ky., and Sally Kirkpatrick of Canton; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Ballinger-Peppard Funeral Home in Richwood. The Rev. Fred Cheney will officiate and interment will be at the Price Cemetery, where American Legion Post #40 will be in charge of graveside services. Friends may call Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. | |||
