Freda M. Kyle


Freda M. Kyle, age 89 of Richwood, died peacefully Thursday evening at her home, surrounded by her loving and devoted family.  She was born December 9, 1918 in Marion to Albert and Maude (Dolan) Russell.

She retired from the North Union School district after 32 years of service as the Secretary to the Superintendent.  She had been active in the North Union Athletic Boosters, North Union Athletic Complex, and had been treasurer of the North Union Levy Committee for many past levies.  The North Union School District honored Freda by naming the new elementary library “The Freda M. Kyle Children’s Library”.  She was an honorary chapter farmer with North Union FFA, an honorary member of the North Union National Honor Society, and earned the Ohio High School Athletic Association State Contribution of Service Award.

Besides supporting education, she also played a large role in community activities.  She had been a member of the Richwood Village Planning Commission, a member of the advisory board of Tri-Rivers JVS, past chairman of the Richwood United Way, Easter Seal and Heart Fund.  She was a past board member of the Richwood Civic Center and had been co-chairman for the Richwood Sesquicentennial.

A long time member of the Richwood First United Methodist Church, she was a Sunday School teacher for over 10 years and Youth Fellowship leader for several years.  She was a 60-year member and past Worthy Matron of the former Mt. Carmel Chapter 42 Order of the Eastern Star, member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Carpe Diem Club and a member of the Union County Republican Club.  In 1989-90 the Richwood Lions Club named her “Citizen of the Year” and the Richwood Business Association chose her as the 1989 Christmas Parade Grand Marshall.  In 1990 the Central Ohio Senior Citizens inducted Freda into their Hall of Fame.

Freda served her school and community with rare dedication and stamina.  To many persons not even related, she was known as “Mom” or “Grandma Freda”.

Freda was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth D. Kyle, who died April 26, 1977; her son Dan B. Kyle, brothers Judson, William, John (Sam), and Robert Russell; and a sister, Nellie Brady.

She is survived by a son, James S. (Jean) Kyle, Richwood; daughter, Nancy K. (Richard) Hoffman, Richwood; Daughter-in-law, Patricia (Jack) Kyle-Beatley, Russells Point; six grandchildren, Sherie (Guy) Lagendyk, Powell; Kim (Tracy) Kyle, Cummings, GA; Kenyon (Beth) Kyle, Amelia Island, FL; Chad (Jodi) Hoffman, Richwood; Dane Kyle, Richwood; Carla (Mike) Moser, Lebanon; twelve great-grandchildren, Nikki, Kyle and Elliott Lagendyk; Ashley, Dakota, Courtney and Keyon Kyle; Taylor, Conor and Jordyn Hoffman; Lincoln and Collin Moser; a sister Louise McDaniel, Clute, TX; Special Cousin, Karen (Jim) Haught, West Virginia; nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended family members, loving caregivers, Barb, Tabitha, Jennifer, Melissa, Danetta, Tanya, Kim and Phyllis; and her special companion, “Angel”.

Funeral Services will be Monday, April 14, 2008 at 11:00 AM in the Richwood First United Methodist Church with special family friend Pastor Joe Rhea officiating.  Burial will follow in Claibourne Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Kim Kyle, Kenyon Kyle, Chad Hoffman, Dane Kyle, grandson-in-law Michael Moser and dear friend Jim Haught.  Friends may call from 2 to 7 PM on Sunday at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood where an Eastern Star service will take place at 7:00.
