Robert A. Jones


Robert A. Jones, age 86, of Bellefontaine, formerly of LaRue, died Wednesday October 26, 2011 at 9:30 AM at his residence.  He was born January 20, 1925 in LaRue, Ohio to the late Damon and Ruie (Williams) Jones. Bob’s first wife Rayda Roux and his brother Kenneth are deceased.  He has been married seventeen years to his current wife June Appelfeller.  Together they have three children; Robyn (George) Hahnert of Columbus, Cindee (Douglas) Wagner Cox of Farragut, TN, and  Kim E. (Tara) Wagner of Bellefontaine.  Four Grandchildren and twelve Great Grandchildren.

Bob is a 1943 graduate of LaRue High School.  While attending High School  he was an accomplished athlete, leading both the football and basketball teams to county championships. Immediately upon graduation he served in the U S Navy during WWII. He served on the U S S Dunlap in the Pacific, including the bombardment of Iwo Jima.

Upon discharge, Bob returned to LaRue and went into business with his father and brother.  In the 1950’s the three of them operated a business in LaRue, known as D.B. Jones & Sons, dressing poultry for Big Bear stores throughout Ohio. After closing the poultry business in 1958, Bob devoted his professional life to the agricultural industry. Throughout the years he ran the Royster-Jones fertilizer plant in LaRue; operated the LaRue  Elevator; worked for Isaly’s as a plant manager in the ice cream plant in Marion; worked for Popped Right in Marion; sold fertilizer to elevators for both Roysters and Baugh’s; and sold Big A liquid fertilizer applicators, traveling the states of Ohio and Michigan, as well as parts of Canada.

Bob was a member of the Phillipi-Clement Post 101 of the American Legion in LaRue. Currently a member of McKees Creek Chapel, West Liberty.

Memorial Services will be held Monday October 31, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in LaRue.  Minister will be Pastor Floyd Lundy. Burial in the LaRue Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from Noon to two PM on Monday at the Funeral Home in LaRue. Graveside Military Rites will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council.
