Joseph Arthur Weygandt

Joseph Arthur Weygandt passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on May 29, 2012 leaving behind his wife, whom he called his “greatest blessing”, Patricia Copeland Weygandt, and their five children, Jay (Ginny), Dale (Denise), Lee (Cathy), Connie (Nathan) Bush, and Dean (Trudi); eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Born on February 16, 1926 in Springfield, Joe had a lifelong interest in HAM radios.  He got his first radio at the age of 14.  His now Silent Key is W8VDD.  He was active on the airwaves all his life, and in recent years was a member of the HAM club of Marion.

His love of country led him to join the Navy on his 18th birthday, and he served for two years as a radiocorpsman on the USS Breton.  He remained in contact with his fellow sailors until his death.

His interest in radio led him to a job as an engineer with WTOL radio and television, where he worked for almost fifty years.  After retiring in 1991, he traveled the country with his wife, seeing all fifty states and parts of Canada.  Joe had experienced Japan during WWII, and he and his wife have visited Europe.

Joe’s faith sustained him all of his life, and he eventually settled in LaRue, where he joined Trinity Lutheran Church, Marion.  He had been an active member of the First English Lutheran Church in Toledo for many years, and he served TLC in many of the same capacities: committees, council, and anything else that needed doing.

Beyond his love of family, faith and radio, Joe also enjoyed organ music.  He has been honored for his work helping to rebuild, restore and maintain the Wurlitzer at the Palace Theatre in Marion and was a member of the Ohio Theater Organ Club.

His wishes were to donate his body to science.

His family will receive friends beginning at noon, prior to a memorial service at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4535 Smeltzer Road, Marion, OH  43302 at 12 noon on Sunday, June 3, 2012.  In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in his memory to Trinity Lutheran Church in Marion or to Heartland Hospice Services, 685 Delaware Ave., Marion, OH 43302-5073.

The family is being assisted by Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, LaRue.  Condolences and remembrances may be expressed at www.stofcheck-ballinger.com
