George Lawrence Young

George Lawrence Young, age 90 of Marion, went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Kingston Residence.  He was born September 13, 1921 in Marion to the late Merle W. and Della R. (Otto) Young.  On September 8, 1949 he married the former Patricia Sanders in Richwood and she died May 31, 2005.  He was also preceded in death by sisters Nellie Twombly of Cupertino California; Ruth Wood of Wilmore, KY; Velma Pierce of Columbus; and brother, John O. Young of Marion.

He was a dedicated member of the First Church of the Nazarene where he had served as an usher for many years.  A farmer, he raised small farm animals, making available his "petting zoo" for kindergarten classes in the local school districts, as well as Lawrence Orchards for their annual "Fall Festival" at the orchard.  He had worked for Landmark and Ohigro in Waldo and was a volunteer for many years at Marca Industries.  He had also worked for the Erie-Lackawana Railroad as a brakeman and later as a conductor for passenger trains out of the Marion Railroad Depot.

One of the true joys in his life was driving school bus in the Pleasant Local School District, which he did for over 50 years, often taking sporting teams to their games.   When the kids got off the bus, he was famous for saying, “Win or walk!”  George loved kids, and was one of the Pleasant Spartans’ biggest fans.  When he was able he was seen at every football and basketball game rooting his beloved Spartans on.
