Charles L. Hastings
Charles L. Hastings, age 92, of LaRue died Thursday November 1, 2012 at 4:01 PM at Riverside Hospital in Columbus. He was born June 28, 1920 in LaRue, Ohio to the late Spear Samuel and Sarah (Bower) Hastings. On September 26, 1945 he married Marguerite A. Marcelin and she died September 19, 2007.
Surviving are daughters, Anne (John) Lieb of Medina and Nancy (Andy) Spencer of LaRue, sons Richard (Jackie) Hastings of Dublin and David Hastings of LaRue. Nine Grandchildren and eleven Great Grandchildren. Sister Mary Burkey of Boardman, Ohio. Sisters-in-law Colette Fishman of New Jersey and Rene Vautrin of Seichamps, France.
Charles graduated from Marseilles High School 1939. Prior to enlisting he attended Ohio Weslyn University. Military service: United States Army WWII veteran; duty in North Africa, Italy and France. 1943-1945. Mark Clark’s 5th Army 34th Red Bull Division, 2nd Battalion 135 Infantry. Post War Europe: UNRA-1945-1947-United Nations Relief Agency-Handling logistics for repatriation of displaced persons ie concentration camp survivors. Post War State Side: OSU graduate College of Agriculture. Vocational Agriculture Teacher Clyde High School 1953-1966. Ohio State University Cooperative Extension Service Knox County Agricultural Agent 1966-1970. OSU Extension Community Resource Development Agent in Mt Gilead 1971-1978. OSU Extension Area Supervisor in the Fremont Office until retirement in 1985. Post retirement: Past commander of Phillippi-Clement Post 101 American Legion of LaRue. Marion County Republican Club. Past member and chairman of the Marion County Republican Executive Committee. Presidential Elector in 1988. Traveled to France and around the states with his wife of 60 plus years.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday November 7, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in LaRue. Minister will be the Rev Edward W. Fugate. Burial in the Larue Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home in LaRue from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday. Graveside Military Rites will be conducted by the Marion Area United Veterans Council.
