Virginia R. (Amato) Davis


Virginia R. (Amato) Davis, age 87 of Richwood, died peacefully Friday morning, January 24, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving family.  She was born April 9, 1926 in Marion to the late Giuseppe “Joe” and Lottie (Hildreth) Amato.  At the age of 7 she moved with her family to the farm on Boundary Road where she lived out the rest of her days.

On March 8, 1947 she married Frank A. Davis, and he died April 3, 2004.  She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Albert, Carmel and Frank Amato; a son-in-law, Paul Phipps; and a grandson, Michael Davis.

She was a devout Catholic and member of the former St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in LaRue.  After St. Joseph’s closed she became a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Marysville.  A 1944 graduate of York High School, Virginia delighted in remembering that she was the only Italian Catholic at her school.  She was devoted to taking care of her family, which was the center of her life.

She is survived by four sons, Randall (Diane) Davis, Marysville; Steve (Cindy) Davis, Richwood; Bruce (Marsha) Davis, Richwood; Keith (Linda) Davis, Richwood; a daughter, Angela Phipps (friend, Donald Garrison), Mt. Victory; a brother, Larry (friend, Paula) Amato, Delaware; nine grandchildren, Michelle (Brian) Palmer; Tamara (Brodie) Rockenbaugh; Franny (Breht Fillinger) Davis; Stephanie Massie; Alison (Nick) Blakely; Emily (Blake) McElroy; Tim Davis; Brandon (Samantha) Davis; Brock (Sarah Buck) Davis; nine great-grandchildren, Joe and Kate Palmer; Elijah, Carter and Quinn Rockenbaugh; Raven Wendling; Madelyn Blakely; Bronson Davis; Wesleigh Davis; two step-grandchildren, Scott Reebel and Lisa Phipps.

Friends may call Monday, January 27, 2014 from 4-7 PM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in Richwood, where there will be a rosary service at 7:00 PM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, January 28 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Marysville, with Rev. David Poliafico officiating.  In consideration of weather conditions, burial will take place on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 10:00 AM in the Claibourne Cemetery.
