Mel Collum

Mel Collum, 59 of rural Marysville died unexpectedly Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Memorial Hospital of Union County.  He was born May 31, 1955 in Bellefontaine to the late William and Bess (Shafer) Collum.

On March 13, 1988 he married the former Ronda K. Hunt in the First Church of the Nazarene in Marion and she survives.

He loved watching his sons play baseball and football from the time they could swing a bat through their young adulthood.  He was well-known for shouting “Attaboy!” when his sons made him proud on the baseball and football fields and never once hesitated to tell his sons how proud he was of them.  He enjoyed his time with his buddies in the press box being a spotter for North Union Football.  He was a very hard worker and was highly respected at Honda for 27 years, retiring on March 1, 2014.

Mel had a wonderful sense of humor that could lighten the room, even when it was just making a goofy face.  He had an endless love for his family and made it his top priority to care for them and make them happy.  Mel had an amazing group of friends that he could sit around and talk to for hours, and enjoyed taking family vacations with them to Gulf Shores, Alabama.  He was an avid OSU, North Union and Cincinnati Reds fan.

A 1973 graduate of Indian Lake High School, he attended the Marysville Grace Brethren Church.  Since his decision to believe in Jesus as per Romans 10:9-10 his family has the assurance that he is in Heaven enjoying a pain-free life.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, Brent Collum, Minster; Josh (April) Collum, Sydney; Cam (Steph McElroy) Collum, Marysville; Shel Collum, Marysville; grandson, Riley Collum; mother and father-in-law, John and Sharon Hunt, Prospect; sister-in-law, Rita (Greg) Clark, Marion; brother-in-law, Steve (Lisa) Hunt, Prospect; two sisters, Billie (Butch) Munz, Bellefontaine; Kathy Collum.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Marysville Grace Brethren Church with Pastor Clancy Cruise officiating.  Burial will follow in Claibourne Cemetery.  Friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 8 PM at the Marysville Grace Brethren Church.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Marysville Grace Brethren Church, 17240 Amrine Wood Road, Marysville, OH  43040.
