Vernon E. “Gene” Cunningham


Vernon E. “Gene” Cunningham, 93 of Raymond died Monday, January 5, 2015 at the Gables at Green Pastures.  He was born September 19, 1921 to the late Edward and Ruth (Sanders) Cunningham.

On October 16, 1949 he married the former Mary E. Lane and she died September 24, 2007.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Army during World War II serving overseas in England.  After that he worked as a carpenter for many years for Harris Jolliff Michael.  He also worked as a farmer.  He was a member of the West Mansfield Coon Hunters Club and Pheasants Forever.  He enjoyed hunting and going on fox drives years ago.  In his leisure time he enjoyed visiting and talking with friends at the Fork in the Road Restaurant in Somersville.

He is survived by four sons, Tim (Debbie) Lane, Raymond; Danny (Pat Coyle) Cunningham, Raymond; John (Connie Landon) Cunningham, Broadway; Tom (Linda) Cunningham, Raymond.  Also surviving are Dennis (Danetta) Babbs, Plain City; whom the Cunninghams raised and considered their son; six grandchildren, Trisha (Mike) Duncan, Todd Lane, Tanya (Dan) Smith, Robbie Eugene (Shannon) Cunningham, Jamie (Cory) Mathew and Tommy (Stephanie) Cunningham; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, January 9, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood with Pastor Joe Rhea officiating.  Military honors will be provided by the Richwood Area Veterans.  Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home in Richwood.
