John A. Roller


John A. Roller, 67 of Marion, passed away Monday, March 2, 2015 at home surrounded by his loving family.  He was born April 12, 1947 in Marion to the late George and Fern (Pae) Roller.  He was also preceded in death by a son, Jess Roller, his sister, Laura Birchfield, and his brother and sister-in-law, Curt and Becky Roller.

John spent his career in education, starting in Croton as a teacher.  He then moved on to the Bloom-Carroll High School where he served as teacher and coach.  His true passion for coaching at Bloom-Carroll was recognized in 2000 when he was inducted into the Mid-State League Hall of Fame, and then in 2012 into the Bloom-Carroll Hall of Fame.  Following his time there he and his family moved to Richwood where he accepted the position of Principal at North Union High School, and later Superintendent.  John then retired from Bucyrus City Schools as Superintendent.

John was a long-time member of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Marion and had been an active member of the Prospect Lions Club.   A huge sports fan, John was an avid supporter of The Ohio State University where he received his undergraduate degree.  He earned his Master’s Degree from Xavier University.

On July 29, 1969 at the LaRue United Methodist Church he married the former Paula Fields and she survives.  He is also survived by their three children, Matthew (Becky) Roller, Charlotte, North Carolina and their three children, Macy, Josie and Hayes; Beth (Mark) Reitler, Mansfield and their three children, Katie, Megan and Sam; Benjamin (Veril) Roller, Batavia and their three children, Jess, Logan and Ally; two sisters, Lois (Edson) Hawk, Mt. Gilead; Lee (Hank) Mull, Gunnison, Colorado; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Fields, Marion; sisters-in-law, Nancy Fields, Marion; Jane (Bart) Wolfe, Marion; a brother-in-law, Bob (Carol) Birchfield, Prospect; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be Friday, March 6, 2015 at 4:00 PM at the Epworth United Methodist Church, 249 E. Center Street, Marion with Rev. David Hoffman officiating.  Friends may call from 1 to 4 PM that day at the church.
