Paul "PJ" Speyer


Paul J. "PJ" Speyer, 84 of Richwood, died Monday, January 18, 2016 at Brookdale in Marion.  He was born May 18, 1931 in Richwood to the late Paul G. and Madonna (Maddox) Speyer.

On December 30, 1950 he married the former Ellen Hoffman and she died in 1998.  He then married the former Ellen Popovich on January 18, 2003 and she survives in Richwood.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Marysville and had been a member of the former St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in LaRue.  A 1950 graduate of Richwood High School, PJ was a life-long farmer and had worked as a plant foreman for the former Marblcast in Richwood, and then worked on the Ohio State Fairgrounds in the maintenance department for many years.  His family had formerly owned Speyer's Five and Dime Store in uptown Richwood.  He was very handy and spent much of his time keeping his rental houses in working order.  He enjoyed camping with his grandchildren, traveling, collecting toy tractors, toy grinders, and yardsticks.  PJ will be remembered for his outgoing personality, his ornery spirit and his dedication to Richwood.

He is survived by children, Julia (Don) Thogmartin, Seabrook Island, SC; Joe (Marty) Speyer, Richwood; Sam (Phyllis) Speyer, Garner, NC; Sally (Charlie) Corbett, Bellevue; Jim (Heather) Speyer, Arlington; stepchildren, Ann (Phil) Knueven, Lewis Center; Karen (Matt) Mohr, Marysville; Keith (Erin) Popovich, Richwood; James Popovich, Littleton, CO; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Jim) Ames, Margaret (Meg) Speyer, Allison (Bill) Evert, Samantha Corbett, Logan Speyer, Madison Speyer, Tyson Speyer, John Popovich, William Popovich, Riley Popovich, Benjamin Popovich, Andrew Popovich, Rebecca Mohr, Joseph Mohr; great-grandchildren, Lauren (Tyler) Creel, Lance Grubb, Axel Evert, Evan Ames, Ellen Ames; and a sister, Sarah (Al) Habinak, Spring, TX.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gene Speyer, a grandson, Chris Thogmartin and a sister, Kathryn Ann Hook.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Patrick Toner on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish.  Burial will follow in Price Cemetery.  Friends may call on Wednesday, January 27 from 3 to 7 PM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood where Rosary Services will begin at 7:00.
