Paul Richard Harmon


Paul Richard Harmon died Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at Heartland of Marion. He was born August 18, 1935 in Indianapolis, IN, adopted at 11 mos. of age by the late Carl & Grace (Gabriel) Harmon.

A 1953 graduate of Prospect High School, he participated in music & sports activities. He then attended Ohio State and Bliss Business College. Paul worked with his father at the Harmon Nursery in Prospect until the business was sold after his father's death in 1957. He then worked at Marion General Hospital, New York Central Railroad, Community Med Center and did public accounting at Smoot, Roush & Manter. He served several years as a council member on the Prospect Village Council and was a board member of the Prospect Sunswim Pool.

He married Sylvia (Bevis) Harmon at the Prospect United Methodist Church on November 11, 1960 and she survives in Prospect. He is also survived by two daughters, Jill Harmon (Rick Hughes), Marion; Lynda (Troy) Ware, Marion; one son, David (Kris) Harmon, Prospect; seven grandchildren, Nicole Gerdes, Jamie (Paul) King (Justin Brown), Joshua Ware (Kaitlyn Pacha), Zachary (Alishia) Ware, Dustin (Gabriella) Harmon, Devan Ware (Ellie Buyer), Nathan Harmon, great-grandchildren, Alexia Byers, Maxwell Miller, Blaine and Colton Ware, Joshua and Bentley Harmon, step-grand son, Nicholas Peterson, brother-in-law, William Hartley and sister-in-law, Joan (Bevis) Hartley, Bellevue; brother-in-law, Richard Clingenpeel, Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, Bernard and infant sister, Donna; sister-in-law, M. Jean (Bevis) Clingenpeel, nephew, J. Troy Keller; niece, Jennifer Harder and in-laws, Jay & Dorothy (Powell) Bevis.

He was a member of the Prospect United Methodist Church, Prospect Durward K of P Lodge, associate member of the American Legion Prospect Post #368 and Prospect Senior Citizens, served as organist at the Radnor Congregational United Church of Christ, member of the former Prospect Lodge #444 F&AM, Prospect Lions Club and the Prospect Baptist Church.

Paul was a golfer, participating in golf leagues at Green Acres and watching the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Indians. He enjoyed traveling with Sylvia on motor coach trips during their retirement trips. During their children's school years, he helped with baseball teams and loved seeing the grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in sports. He had earned his private pilot’s license. Paul enjoyed meeting his friends, Rex Shaffer and Charles Russell for lunch at the Prospect American Legion on Saturdays.

Funeral services will be Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Prospect United Methodist Church with Pastors Jerry Lewis and Dan Bill officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 PM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Prospect.
