Ernest “Ernie” Glenn Fields


Ernest “Ernie” Glenn Fields, 87 of Richwood died unexpectedly Monday, October 15, 2018 at his home.

He was born August 25, 1931 in Richwood to the late Ernest Claude and LaVerna “Verna” (Simpson) Fields.

On July 12, 1952 he married the former Thelma Louise Wood in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Prospect and she died February 20, 2010. He was also preceded in death by a son, Mitchell “Mickey” Fields.

After attending Richwood High School, he married Thelma just before leaving for Army boot camp and training at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, followed by White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico, working in the guided missile program. After coming home from the Army, he worked at Marion Power Shovel, and then moved on to Whirlpool where he worked as a lab technician for 38 years before retiring. He also ran the Fields Cleaning Center in Richwood, which was a dry cleaning and laundromat company owned by Ernie.

He was a good friend and always lent a helping hand. He was a founding member of the Richwood Gun and Game Club. He always attended the Whirlpool retirees Monday morning breakfast club at the McDonald’s in Marion.

He is survived by two daughters, Pam (Joe) Alli, Belleville, Michigan; Kim (Thomas) James, Whitehall; grandchildren, Cassandra (James) Garrison, Caledonia; Laura (Micah) Brandt, Auburn, Kentucky; Renee (Scott) Alli, Germantown Hills, Illinois; Marilyn (Nick) Alli, Wayne, Michigan; Jennifer (Jason) Lazzell, Tampa; great-grandchildren, Joe Alli, Jenna Lazzell and Gabby James.

Funeral services will be Friday, October 26, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood with Pastor Joe Rhea officiating. Burial will follow in Claibourne Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Richwood Area Veterans. Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home in Richwood.
