Ruth E. Shields Ransome Webb


Ruth E. Shields Ransome Webb, 98 of Richwood died Saturday, April 29, 2023 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born March 4, 1925, in Marion County to the late Charles M. and Celia (Knapp) Shields. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Abram W. Ransome in 1956, her second husband, Leonard J. Webb Sr. in 1995, a daughter, Linda S. Parsons, sons, Charles W. Ransome and Robert Webb; sons-in-law, Dan B. Kyle and Jack R. Beatley; grandchildren, Jeffrey Miller, Abram Ransome, and Charity Ransome Hill; sisters, E. Maxine Wilson, Kathleen Kramer, and Emma Cheney; and brothers, Charles Shields and Thomas Shields.

Ruth was a schoolteacher for 30 years in the Elgin school district. She was a member of the Richwood First Baptist Church. A cheerleader and an avid basketball player, she was part of the 1941 county championship team from Kirkpatrick High School. She loved watching basketball on TV but really loved attending high school games.

She was a member of the Richwood Garden Club. Ruth was happiest when she was working in her flower beds, planting new seeds or bulbs, pulling weeds and hoeing. She enjoyed watching the birds at her feeders.

She is survived by a daughter, Patricia “Pat” Kyle, Richwood; a son, Leonard J. (Bev) Webb Jr., Marion; a daughter-in-law, Vicki Webb, Marion; a sister, Charlotte J. (Irvin) Markley, The Villages, Florida; sisters-in-law, Ruth Simmons, Lee Shields and Betty Scheiderer; grandchildren, Stacey Webb, Jamie Webb, Char (Scott Cooper) Hill, Darcy (Jamie) Blair, Kenyon (Beth) Kyle, Nathan Dane Kyle, Brad (Terah) Webb, Susan Tesmer, and Daryl Ransome; and 28 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

The family would like to acknowledge the loving and skillful care provided by her caregivers, Goldie Hensley, Mary Brady, Kathy Williamson, Jody Durr, Ella Davis and Jerri Edwards, who brought joy and friendship and greatly improved Ruth's quality of life in her final years.

Funeral services will be Monday, May 8, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood with Pastor Joseph Rhea officiating. Burial will follow in Claibourne Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4 PM at the funeral home in Richwood.
