Samuel Jay Speyer


Samuel Jay Speyer, 65 of Garner, North Carolina, died on October 13, 2023 at Duke Raleigh Hospital in Raleigh, NC of pneumonia and congestive heart failure.

He was born May 20, 1958, in Marion to the late Paul James “PJ” and Ellen (Hoffman) Speyer. He is predeceased by his brother Gene L. Speyer; his nephew, Chris Thogmartin and his niece, Meg Speyer.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, whom he married June 20, 1987, in York Center and his daughter Madison. He is also survived by his siblings Julia (Don) Thogmartin of Seabrook Island, SC; Joseph (Martha) Speyer of Richwood; Sally (Charles D.) Corbett of Huron and James (Heather) Speyer of Findlay; three nieces, Liz (Speyer) Ames and her three children; Allison (Bill) Evert and their two sons; Samantha (Ethan) Gundrum and their two daughters and two nephews Logan and Ty Speyer.

Sam graduated from North Union High School in 1976 and earned an associate degree in information technology from Marion Technical College. In his earlier years, Sam was a green belt in Okinawan Karate and a member of the Knights of Pythias. He and Phyllis lived in Arizona for seven years before calling North Carolina home. After the birth of their daughter, Sam retired from IBM in 2003 to be a stay-at-home dad. He loved fishing, woodworking and sewing.

He attended St. Mary Mother of the Church in Garner, NC and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Fr. James Keenan Council #11266.

Services celebrating Sam’s life will be held Friday October 20, 2023 at 7:00 pm at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in Richwood. Father Ed Shikina will officiate. Friends may call two hours prior to the service beginning at 5:00 pm at the funeral home in Richwood. Private family burial will take place in the Price Cemetery.
