Jerry Gene DeWitt

Jerry Gene DeWitt, age 85, of Green Camp passed away peacefully on Monday, January 1, 2024 at home, following a brave battle with cancer and heart disease.

Jerry was born on August 25, 1938 in York Center to James W. DeWitt and Edna (Rockhold) DeWitt Fausnaugh.  He was a 1956 graduate of Byhalia York High School.  On August 12, 1960 in York Center he married Ellen (Erwin) DeWitt and together they shared over 63 years of marriage.

Jerry was a loving husband and proud father of four sons and two grandsons.  He was self-employed as a Pepsi Cola distributor and retired from Lowes Home Improvement.  He served in the US Army Reserves.  He was one of the founding owners of Berwick Pizza from 1974-1992 and made many lifelong friendships with the employees and customers there.

He was well known in the Village of Green Camp and actively served his community in many ways, including working as the Green Camp Village Clerk, performing village maintenance and was a member of the Green Camp Township Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years, including serving as Assistant Fire Chief.  Jerry was a friend and mentor to many youth of the Village of Green Camp.

Jerry enjoyed the 8 winters he and Ellen spent at Vista Del Lago park in Bradenton, Florida and the many friendships made there while playing cards, shuffleboard, and walking the park.  He loved the sunny, blue skies and warm temperatures of Florida.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Ellen DeWitt; three sons:  Kent (Brenda) DeWitt of Richwood, Kyle (Gina) DeWitt of Green Camp, and Kirk DeWitt of Green Camp; one grandson: Dylan DeWitt; three brothers:  Tom DeWitt, Dan DeWitt, and Richard (Dick) DeWitt; one sister:  Judy Durham; brother-in-law: Nelson Erwin Sr.; daughter in law: Jodi Bertke (Adam Bertke) and Marie Lahmer along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by son: Keith DeWitt; grandson: Joshua DeWitt; and two sisters: Janet Miller and Barbara Ritchie.

Jerry selflessly donated his body to the Ohio State University College of Medicine, Division of Anatomy Body Donation Program.  His generous gift will play a vital part in the training of future medical practitioners.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Tranquility Hospice, who became like family over the past six months.
