Carl Gordon "Doc" Sparling 28, 1932 in Ravenna and grew up in Bellaire. He was the son of the late Carl and Inez (Gordon) Sparling. After graduating from Bellaire High School, he served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1955, stationed in Guam during the Korean War.

Ellen Speyer, 66, of Richwood died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at her home. She retired in 1994 from the Union County Treasure's Office and was a former owner of the Speyer's Dime Store in Richwood. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in LaRue, the Union County Republican Women, Order of Eastern Star and the farm bureau.

Also surviving are a son, Paul J. Speyer, Richwood; two daughters, Kathryn A. Hook, Richwood, and Sarah J. Habinak, Houston, Texas; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
